What I Learned While Editing My Blog

Yeah, so my blog post title is a reference to a Don Miller book and that is fine with me I love the book! Also, before getting to far along I would like to to go ahead and say that there probably won't be anything profound in this post, if there is it was purely accidental.

So like the title of this post says I editted my blog. I was thinking the other night about it and how I hadn't posted in a long time. As a result of me thinking about my blog I got on and started reading through some of my old posts and I realized that some of the stuff I had posted was, in my opinion, ignorant rambling. So I decided I was going to do some editing, I would cut out some of the nonsense from the posts that I decided got to stay, I would delete some posts entirely, and I changed the wording of a few posts for a variety of reasons. While I did this I discovered a few things about myself from when I first opened up my blog back in early 2009.

The first thing I learned, which really emcompasses everything that I learned as the rest seem to be subcatagories of this, is that I've grown a lot in the past couple of years. When I first opened up my blog I leaned a lot more in an anarchistic direction. Now at this point I still have anarchistic thoughts, very often actually, but these thoughts come more from a position of love and desire to see the best for others than from the position of I hate the government that they did before. I'm still not real fond of the government but I also do not think doing away with it is the solution, reform is needed. I have recently been reading through Judges and up now into 2 Kings and I think we as people at times need someone we can physically see to lead us BUT we need that person to be hearing from God on a regular basis.

That said another area where I have grown and matured is in my thoughts about love. In the past I think I was started on the right path but there was no substance to my thoughts on love, now I think its started to leech onto something with substance. Previously I could have talked about how love requires action, I still fully believe that, but that action could easily have been summarized into something as little as telling someone you love them, or for God going to church on Sunday. No real substance there. Now I'm not saying that little things don't sometimes say something about love but love cannot simply be I get you a fork at dinner and you do my laundry when it comes to other people anymore than it can simply be I go to church on Sunday and try to read my Bible daily when it comes to God.

I think the last major thing that stood out to me in how much my thoughts on Jesus have changed. When I first opened this blog I could have shared a thought about Jesus or the Gospel on it but they would have been shallow thoughts. Like my thoughts on love this grew into something with substance. I feel like at this point in life if I post a blog that talks specifically about something dealing with Jesus or religion or hopefully any number of other things, it will have substance. The goal is for the things I post here to be able to help others somehow.

In continuing on with the things I learned the next one is that I really think there must be a point to what is posted on a blog. If I'm going to take the time to read what someone has written or to listen to what they say, there has to be a point otherwise I'm wasting my time. Now that said there must then be a point to this post, I believe that point of this post is to express how much things change. Many of the posts that I removed while editing were post that would basically follow a pattern of "I'm bored listen to me ramble about how much I hate college" or some variety of a "woe is me" post. That served no purpose for anyone reading it.

The last thing I plan to share that I found while I was editing my blog is that I have a desired purpose for my blog. In the past, this was primarily edited stuff, I didn't always have family friendly or useful posts coming up. My desired purpose for my blog is to be a place where I can explore, hopefully with others, what living like Christ looks like. A place where we can move faith from a series of beliefs to a way of life. I want everything I post to serve a purpose, to not be a waste of your time and mine.  I'm not going to make a promise that I will post more often, I've done that in the past and it might last a couple weeks but thats all, but I will promise that when I post it will have a point and I will try to focus more and more on using this blog as a place to explore living out our faith in a way that draws us closer and closer to Christ, thus making us more and more people after God's heart.
